What to do about glasses

The most common issue with glasses is the glare.  But if you wear glasses every day, then you should wear them for your senior portraits.  To avoid these issues we ask that you remove the lenses before your session.  Or if you prefer, ask your optometrist to borrow a pair of empty frames.  Several mail order glasses sites will loan you up to three free frames to try (cc required but no purchase necessary). You will still look like you, just without the glare.

Great Lashes

Clumpy mascara does not make for pretty, separated lashes.  And most definitely does not make for a pretty picture.  Most brushes pick up more product then necessary for a single application.  So after you remove your brush from the tube, gently wipe the excess mascara off on a tissue.  That way you’ll wind up with lengthened lashes that look like eyelash extensions, not a spidery mess.  Once a mascara gets old it can cause major clumping issues too.  Plan ahead and get a fresh tube.  Did you know that curling your eyelashes can help make your eyes look bigger?  You may be afraid to use an eyelash curler, or maybe you don’t even own one.  Give it a try a week or so before your session, check out some tutorials and see what you think even just in a selfie.  Certain mascara will give you length while others offer thickness and volume.  Try using both to obtain long lashes with thickness and volume.

Is my photographer experienced in senior portraits?

Dan Bettinger will be your senior portrait photographer.  He is one of the most experienced senior portrait photographs in the Denver area.  Portraits by the Bettinger Family have been a Denver tradition since the early 60’s.  He has a passion and a love for creating portraits that not only make the senior feel fantastic about themselves, but that a parent will be excited to hang in their home.

Clean Clothes

This sounds like an obvious thing to consider when choosing your outfit to go to school or work, let alone to be professionally photographed.  Often what happens is clothing has stains that you may not notice in everyday wear.  This includes light colors and dark colors. Take a good look at your outfits, stand back while they are hanging on the hanger and check it out in good light.

Do you offer hair and makeup services?

The most important reason we suggest a pro makeup application is because a pro knows how to apply makeup for the camera. A pro gets a perfect foundation color to match the skin tone and can select the right colors to make the clients features pop! A pro knows how to contour to bring out the right amount of shadow or highlight.  We recommend “Blo - Blow dry bar” in the Happy Canyon Shopping Center. 720-638-5296.  They are located close to our portrait studio making it convenient to schedule your appointment and allow a minimal amount of time to travel straight to us. If you choose to use someone that needs to meet you at our studio, please contact us ahead of time to schedule styling space.

Be aware of facial hair

A neatly groomed face is imperative no matter what your style.  We recommend you shave the day of, or even just before you leave home for the studio.  Stubble will show and can be costly to remove.  Bring your electric razor if you want some pics with and without.  And don’t forget about neck hair!

Will the photographer come to me?

While Bettinger Photography has our own private indoor/outdoor studios, we understand that you may have a special place or a specific vision for your senior portraits.  No problem! Dan Bettinger is highly trained and extremely experienced with different lighting and working in different locations. Consider your own home too as some places have rules about photographers using their park or entering their grounds.

Wear Long Sleeves

Whether you think your arms look too skinny or too big, choosing a shirt with a sleeve at least to the elbow will help regardless.  And wearing a longer sleeve will also focus the attention on your face instead of your arms. This image would have looked so much different if she was wearing a tank top.
